In Maori mythology, Tuterakiwhanoa cleaved the fjords of New Zealand’s Fiordland with his magical caw or axe. He began along the southern coast of the South Island, perfecting his technique as he moved north.
Join us on this full-day tour to the world-renowned Milford Sound; Tu’s final and most majestic creation, the crowning jewel of Fiordland.
Beginning with pickup from Queenstown, Frankton or Te Anau, you will travel with small-group specialists, Cheeky Kiwi.
As we depart Queenstown and Frankton, we hug the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu - New Zealand’s third largest lake – along the section known as the Devil’s Staircase. With shear drop-off cliffs peering at you from across the lake, capped by peaks often dusted in snow, your camera will be whirring long before you thought it would.
Traveling further south and soon making the turn to the west, you will be impressed by the ever-changing vista of views; mountains, tussock land, rushing braided rivers. It’s easy to see why much of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed in this region. Making our way through the vibrant lake-side town of Te Anau, you get your first true look at the simply majestic mountains of Fiordland as they tower above the country’s second largest and third deepest lake.
The 119km road from Te Anau to Milford Sound is a journey of visual sensory overload, one that can transport you to the wild days of yesteryear with just the barest amount of imagination. Not only will you have time to enjoy multiple scenic and experiential stops such as Mirror Lake and The Chasm, your guide will share with you rich tales of history and legend along the way.
Not to be outdone, the local birdlife are likely to delight you. Look out for the famed mischievous alpine parrot, the Kea; it’s baby’s cry echoing throughout the valley as it swoops in with a flash of green orange plumage.
As you emerge from the Tunnel, you are once again blown away as the valley descends sharply before you to the water’s edge, with hundreds of waterfalls on all sides preparing you for what is to come.
Finally we wind our way down the valley to the boat terminal, where you can choose free time or board your vessel for your cruise of the awe-inspiring Milford Sound. You have two options for companies to cruise with in Milford sounds either our standard cruise with Go Orange or upgrade to a Real Journeys cruise. (please book cruise option during booking process)
On your cruise you will have uninterrupted views of thunderous waterfalls, and Mitre Peak, the most photographed mountain in the country, as well as a vista quickly becoming recognised from such films as Lord of the Rings, Wolverine and Alien: Covenant, you cannot help but be wowed by this stunning land and seascape.
Our partners company, knows how to treat our guests; with lunch options onboard, friendly crew, and a boat able to get up close and personal with both wildlife and wild waterfalls for those internet-breaking photos.
After the completion of your cruise, your tour isn’t over yet; we detour on the return journey to take you on a short 20-minute return walk to the waterfalls of Lake Marian. Minimum effort, maximum return in scenery! An exciting swing bridge across the gushing, crystal-clear waters of the Hollyford River welcomes you to the Darran Mountains, and just a short 10 minute stroll through lush, green rainforest rewards you with the up-close alpine-icy waterfalls of Lake Marian, some of the purest water on planet Earth. Crossing back over the river marks the beginning of your journey back to the present; we slowly wind our way back to both civilisation and the present day.
